Take 3 is an opportunity provided to VMware employees who’ve worked at the company for at least 5 years to take 3 months and work on something completely different from their regular day jobs. I chose to take the opportunity to apply my UX design skills to a community service project and work with the Community for Open Source Microfinance (COSM) on an application called Mifos.
For the next 3 months I will work with the Mifos folks and the COSM community to develop an updated user experience to make it easier for microfinance lenders and clients to make and manage their loans on a variety of devices. Mifos is an open-source application to help microfinance institutions more efficiently and effectively deliver financial services to the poor.
Their mission is to create a world of “3 Billion Maries”, where each person has access to the financial resources needed to create a better life for themselves and their family. Empowered by a tiny loan, Marie-Claire Ayurwanda of Rwanda survived HIV and the death of two husbands to build a house for herself and her four children.
My hope is that improving the user experience will make it just a little easier for the next “Marie”.
